How to shelter thuja for the winter from frost and sun

All thuja are conifers of the Cypress family. Three types have found application in landscape and landscape design:

  • Arbor vitae
  • Thuja western
  • Thuja folded

All of them are evergreens, but western thuja, remaining bright green in summer, acquires a bronze color in the cold season and its plantings look gloomy and unsightly, in addition, its crown is very often asymmetric. Thuja folded keeps the needles green and shiny all winter.

Thuja is a fairly winter-hardy and wind-resistant plant, but many decorative thuja with variegated-colored needles, decorative crown, as well as young plants, can suffer from:

  • low temperatures
  • winter winds
  • sunburn

Therefore, in the first years after planting, it is worth considering how to cover the thuja for the winter and prevent an immature plant from dying. Additional protection may be needed for both the root system and ground parts, trunk and branches.

Root protection in winter

Before the onset of the first frost and freezing of the soil, it is necessary to remove all weeds around the tree. Make dry top dressing with complex fertilizers, for example, such as "Kemira Osenya". Spread the fertilizer around the trunk and carefully dig it to a depth of no more than 5-10 cm, dig it up very carefully, since the roots of the thuja are superficial.

This will help the plant survive the winter and come out of dormancy safely in the spring. Dry frosty weather is dangerous for thuja roots in winter. When the soil freezes, they can dry out from a lack of moisture, therefore, in the second - third decade of October, it is necessary to insulate the trunk circle. For this, the following are suitable:

  • coniferous land
  • mature manure
  • compost
  • peat
  • straw
  • forest tree leaves

It is necessary to pour these materials under the crown, in a loose layer of at least 10 - 30 cm, depending on the value of winter negative temperatures in the region, spruce branches can be laid on top.

In the spring, the spruce branches should be removed, and the mulching mixture should be left, it will serve as an organic fertilizer for the plant.

The ground part of the plant also needs shelter, especially for young seedlings in the first year of planting.

Shelter of the crown of a thuja for the winter

In winter, there are several hazards for the crown and trunk of conifers:

  • negative temperature values
  • bright sunlight in late winter - early spring
  • severity of snow

Therefore, when choosing the type of shelter, all factors must be taken into account.

To protect the plant, you can use the material at hand. Small, one - two-year-old seedlings can be covered with five-liter plastic bottles from under drinking water. Cut off the bottom and set gently over the plant. Larger specimens can be wrapped with thick paper, securing it with wire, twine, stapler.

Currently, the industry produces a variety of modern, reliable, covering materials. The following are suitable for sheltering a thuja:

  • agrotherm
  • spandbond
  • lutrasil

These materials are not very cheap, but they are lightweight, durable, wear-resistant, last five to seven years. They can simply wrap the plants, having previously slightly pulled the branches.

Also, to cover medium-sized plants, you can first build a frame over them from pipes, wood, wire, and stretch any white covering material over the frame. When building a frame, it is better to give preference to the shape of a hut, since the snow will easily slide down and will not push the material inward, damaging the branches of the plant. During the winter, snow should be removed from the sheltered thujas several times, and when clearing the site, in no case should they be covered with additional snow.

Traditionally, it is believed that young, medium-sized plants should be covered in the year of planting, but in order not to destroy the adult plant, some protective measures must still be taken.

Although large and adult plants tolerate frosts down to -35 degrees, bright sun is still very dangerous for them. Under its influence, serious damage to the bark occurs, therefore, from about the second half of February, protective screens from the sunny side can be installed in front of the plants.

Large-sized specimens (up to 4 m) transplanted in autumn can also be very badly affected in winter, you must try to cover not only the roots, but also the crown. You can carefully wrap the material around all large branches and pull them slightly against the trunk.

If all measures to shelter the thuja for the winter are taken in a timely manner, then it will safely pass the cold season.

What to do with thuja in spring?

In spring, do not rush to open the thuja, because the March sun can severely burn plants. The optimum time to open the threshing floor in spring is when the soil thaws completely.

In most regions of Russia, this is the end of April - mid-May. If the whole thuja opens at once, then this must be done in cloudy weather. Or open the plant gradually, allowing time to adapt to sunlight. Watering with Kemira Lux fertilizer diluted in warm water will help the plant recover in spring.

All of the above measures will help thuja maintain a decorative appearance and not suffer in winter and early spring.
